Kick-start of an international career

I am a Junior Product Manager. Essentially, my job is to be the glue that makes market trends and demands come together with the technical possibilities available at the moment. In doing so, I help to develop new products that are not only technically advanced but also designed and produced in a way that consumers can relate to.

An international career

When I was doing my Bachelor degree, I spent the two last semesters in Ireland. Doing so showed me that I really like being part of an international environment. So when I was preparing for my Master’s, I started looking around for European business schools that offered my preferred combination of marketing and management.

My research took me to Copenhagen Business School that offers this exact combination. I then started to investigate Copenhagen further as I did not know much about it. I quickly learned that Denmark, and Copenhagen in particular, has a lot of schools and companies that combine high-end design and top class product quality. All in all, Copenhagen seemed like the perfect choice for me and so it came about that in late 2016, I graduated with a Master in International Marketing and Management from Copenhagen Business School.

I think the biggest difference is the special Danish culture. I am in contact with a lot of my friends back in Italy and they are in the beginning of their careers just like me. When I tell them about the big challenges I am trusted to handle, my friends envy me. In Italy it is a lot more hierarchical, and a junior profile is not trusted to do or say that much.

For me, it is great to know, that I am allowed to ask questions. And I will always get feedback that I can use. When I do something well, my Manager will tell me. Naturally, it also goes the other way around but the feedback I have received so far has always been constructive so that I can learn from it. I call the Danish leadership style “human”, and I really like it.

Danes are simply more relaxed and informal than people in many other countries. We can make jokes and have a good time together. Still, everyone is just as focused and dedicated to create amazing results like in any other country.

My role

I am a Junior Product Manager. Essentially, my job is to be the glue that makes market trends and demands come together with the technical possibilities available at the moment. In doing so, I help to develop new products that are not only technically advanced but also designed and produced in a way that consumers can relate to.

I find it very cool that I am expected to know a little bit about everything. I have to understand the customers’ needs, the language of the engineers and the business model. I really like that part. I find it very fascinating to dig into what consumers think and like. I use these insights in brainstorms with my colleagues, and that is just as much fun. Being part of a team of brainy and highly dedicated people is very motivating. Actually, I ended up in the job I wanted before I even knew it existed.

Right now I am still building experience. I have great colleagues. I have very interesting tasks and I work with high-end products that make state-of-the-art technology end design come together. Actually, it’s even better than I dreamed of. When you are in the beginning of your career, it is a really great thing to experience that your colleagues appreciate the knowledge and ideas you bring to the table. At the same time, I naturally learn a lot in the process, and since getting rid of the “Junior” in my title is my first career goal, gaining more knowledge and experience is my best way forward.

In the future, I hope to grow into a more leading role. I want to test myself in larger projects and have a bigger responsibility. Until now, I have learned that the company acknowledges talent and dedication. So I am confident that it will happen.
