How to test EPOS device with a different USB port and check the USB power management settings

Cross-testing your audio device with different USB ports can help determine if an issue lies with the USB port or the EPOS device itself.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to perform this test on your computer.

1) Identify available USB ports

  • Identify the USB ports on your computer. These can be on the front, on the back back or on the sides of a desktop computer or along the sides of a laptop.

2) Initial connection

  • Plug your EPOS device into one of the USB ports.
  • Wait for the computer to recognize the device. This may take a few moments.

3) Check if the EPOS device is powering on and is there any LED light on it when it is connected.

4) Switch the USB ports

  • Disconnect the audio device from the current USB port.
  • Plug the audio device into a different USB port.
  • Wait for the computer to recognize the device again.

5) Compare the results from each USB port:

  • If the EPOS device works consistently across all ports, the issue may not be related to the USB ports.
  • If the EPOS device works on some ports but not others, the issue may be with the specific USB ports.
  • If the EPOS device does not work on any port, the issue may be with the audio device.

Check the USB power management settings by following these steps:

For Windows

1) Open Device Manager

  • Press Win + X to open the Power User menu.
  • Select Device Manager from the list.

2) Locate the USB controllers

  • In Device Manager, scroll down and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.

3) Access Power Management settings

  • Right-click on the first item listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers (usually labeled as USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub).
  • Select Properties from the context menu.
  • In the Properties window, go to the Power Management tab.

4) Adjust the Power Management settings

  • Look for a checkbox labeled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
  • To prevent the system from turning off the USB device to save power, uncheck this box.
  • Click OK to apply the changes.

5) Repeat for all USB Controllers

  • Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each item listed under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section.

6) Check Advanced Power settings (Optional)

  • Press Win + X and select Power Options.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
  • Click on Change advanced power settings.
  • In the Power Options window, expand the USB settings section.
  • Expand USB selective suspend setting.
  • Set this to Disabled.

For MacOS

1) Open System Information

  • Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select About This Mac.
  • Click on System Report.

2) Locate USB Information

  • In the System Information window, select USB from the sidebar under the Hardware section.

3) Review USB Device Tree

  • The USB Device Tree will show all USB devices connected to your Mac, along with details about each device.
  • This information can help determine if your USB devices are receiving adequate power.

4) Check Energy Saver Settings

  • Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  • Select Energy Saver.
  • Adjust the settings to ensure that your Mac does not enter sleep mode or turn off USB devices too quickly. For instance:
  • Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible".
  • Adjust the Computer Sleep and Display Sleep sliders to suit your needs.
